Haiti Action Team
Our Response to Haiti Earthquake Survivors: Haiti Action Team (HAT)After the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010, parishioners quickly formed the Haiti Action Team (HAT) to provide immediate assistance.
Since then, HAT has worked closely with our the Haitian congregation at L’Eglise de l’Epiphanie in Stamford to provide financial support and urgently needed supplies in the aftermath of the quake.
We are now creating a lasting presence to help rebuild Haiti and its institutions through local Outreach partnerships.

Our Haiti Outreach Partner: Saint Paul’s Church

Saint Luke's Haiti Action Team recently formed a long-term Outreach partnership Saint Paul's Church in Torbeck, Haiti. As we develop the most effective way to support and work alongside our new Outreach partner, you’ll be hearing more. In the meantime, here’s some basic information on Saint Paul’s and the communities it serves.
Torbeck is a town of 25,000 people and the church has 500 members (with an average Sunday attendance of at least 180). Pere (or Reverend) Alphonse has been the Rector at Saint Paul's for over three years. The church does have a school, handling grades K-12.
Saint Paul's also has six mission churches around the Torbeck area. These are Saint Mathais, Gracette (pop 2,560); Saint Andre, Maccabe (pop 9,750); Saint Hilaire de Poitiers, Petie Riviere (pop 4,000); Saint Barthelmy, Dubreuil (pop 6,000); Incarnation, Le Petre (pop 6,000); and Saint Marc, Lhomond (pop 3,000). The average size of the congregations in these mission churches is 185, with roughly 50% attending Sunday worship, on average.
The mission churches are located in very rural areas around Torbeck, most within an hour's drive on unpaved roadways. While Torbeck does have electricity, the rural areas do not. Most of the mission churches have schools. A good number of the students walk an hour or so to attend school.
In our communications with Pere Alphonse, he has made us aware of the need for drinkable water at two of the schools, Saint Andre and Saint Hilaire. There is also the need for equipping a medical clinic at Saint Barthelmy and to place a doctor there.
Our Haiti Action Team is working with Pere Alphonse to further understand both their needs and the requirements to fulfill them. During the May visit to Dubreuil, team members saw the poorly equipped clinic. We are now trying to determine specific equipment needs and how to get those items safely to Saint Barthelmy.
