Music at Saint Luke's
Designed to Gladden the Heart and Stir the Soul.

As a Saint Luke’s chorister, you are an accepted member of the worship team. Your ministry is to inspire and lead the congregation in song. Whether youth or senior, beginner or old hand, singing with one of our choirs is an opportunity for you to grow musically and spiritually. It is a learning experience, a privilege, a responsibility, and a joy to sing alongside incredibly gifted singers under the guidance of musical directors the caliber of Neal Campbell, Charlie Walker and Cindy Holberg.
Music literacy is not the main goal of music education at Saint Luke’s, but rather a means toward a higher end. The aesthetic and spiritual connections singing can provide our children reach far beyond musicality and logic. Ministry through music deeply conveys the importance of responsibility and community while addressing the needs of the whole child.
The Primary Choir (age four and older) begins by learning folk songs, dances and games from around the world in addition to sacred songs for service. The success of any good choir depends on both the focus and relaxation of its singers. With this in mind, we incorporate plenty of play into every rehearsal as we hone our ears and voices. Singers learn the basics of proper posture and breathing, while movement and games help them to stay focused, feel relaxed and shed any shred of self-consciousness. All young singers are welcome! They sing at selected times of the year, and practices are on Thursdays from 4:45-5:15 pm (snack at 4:30 pm).

The Junior Choir is a more advanced choir that reinforces the basics of musicianship, develops early sight-reading skills, and prepares singers for the challenge of joining the Senior and Parish choirs for Sunday service. Singers must demonstrate the ability to sing in tune, alone and with others, to read basic rhythm patterns, and to follow directions. While Junior Choir rehearsals continue to foster a love of music through singing games and dance, these activities are now used to reinforce the cooperative behavior necessary to function within a choral ensemble. They sing at selected times of the year for the parish and rehearse weekly on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30 pm.

The Senior Choir of Boys and Girls usually sings weekly at the main service and for special seasonal services and Evensongs.  The main practice is on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 pm. There are additional make up practices on Tuesdays at 3:30-4:30 and Wednesdays at 5:30-6:30.  The expectation is that members will attend one or more of the three each week.  They practice on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 pm.  The choir's repertoire is challenging and has included recordings and tours.

The Adult Choir sings together with the Senior Boys and Girls Choir and on their own at regular and special seasonal services. Anyone with the ability to match a pitch and who can be in regular attendance is welcome.

The Chimers Guild is a group of parishioners of all ages who play our chime of bells before and after services and on other occasions. Anyone with rudimentary keyboard skills can learn to play hymns and melodies from the bell clavier.
